Literature Text

do you know,
you remind me
of that moment after sunset
when the sky is dark
but the stars have yet
to begin their twinkling

please don’t misunderstand–
darkness becomes you
and you are still beautiful,
but your light is fading
and your freckles
haven’t yet begun to shine–
or is it that I simply cannot see?

you remind me
of the calm before a storm,
the intake of breath
before beginning to speak,
the anticipation
before something
important happens.

because that’s what you are to me:
important

yet you don’t fit
into any category:
are you sunset or night?
are you dark or light?

you seem to hover
between two worlds,
but I am made of flesh
and can only live
in one world or the other.
waiting in the void between them
will kill me in time,
but I don’t think you realize that…

you go on
and tease me with the not knowing,
waving a feather in my face
so that I don’t know
what is true
and what is only feather down,
leaving me to waver
on the edge of one world
and still be wondering
if I should be waiting for you
on the other.

please,
I know where my heart lies
but I have given up trying
to see what yours will do-
to itself, or to mine.
so please,
tell me
what this pain is for…
.
.
.
.
.

don’t you know?

...your silence
is what kills me the most.
